What should I do if an integration fails because of API rate limits or provider restrictions?

External services often limit how frequently applications can access their APIs. These restrictions help providers manage infrastructure capacity, prevent abuse, and enforce account-specific usage limits. When an integration exceeds an external provider's limits, requests may be delayed, rejected, or temporarily blocked. What is API rate limiting? Rate limiting restricts the number of API requests permitted during a defined period. Limits may apply per account, application, user, endpoint, organization, or other provider-defined criteria. Common signs of rate limiting 1. HTTP 429 Too Many Requests. 2. Errors indicating that a request quota has been exceeded. 3. Temporary failures during periods of high activity. 4. Requests that work individually but fail when executed repeatedly. 5. Provider messages indicating that access must be retried later. What causes rate limits to be exceeded? Possible causes include: 1. High-frequency automation schedules. 2. Multiple workflows using the same external account. 3. Large volumes of records being processed. 4. Repeated retries after unsuccessful requests. 5. External subscription limits. 6. Provider-specific API quotas. 7. Concurrent requests from multiple connected applications. How to troubleshoot rate limiting Step 1: Identify the provider and operation. Determine which external API is rejecting requests. Step 2: Review the error message. Check whether the provider returned a rate-limit error or a retry interval. Step 3: Consult the provider's API documentation. Identify the relevant request limits and quota rules. Step 4: Review operation frequency. Determine whether repeated or concurrent requests are contributing to the issue. Step 5: Reduce unnecessary requests. Avoid requesting the same information repeatedly when it is not required. Step 6: Respect provider retry guidance. If the provider specifies when requests may resume, follow that guidance. Step 7: Review external account limits. Some providers apply different limits depending on account type or subscription. Step 8: Test after the restriction expires. Confirm that the integration can resume normal operation. Should I repeatedly retry a failed request? No. Aggressive retries may increase the problem or trigger additional provider restrictions. Retry behavior should respect the external provider's requirements. Can Polyosync override external API limits? No application should be assumed capable of overriding limits enforced by an external provider. Does upgrading my Polyosync subscription remove external provider limits? Not necessarily. External provider limits are separate from Polyosync subscription entitlements. Will failed requests automatically run again? This depends on the operation and the retry behavior implemented for the relevant integration. Do not assume automatic recovery without verifying the result. Recommended approach Reduce unnecessary API activity, review provider quotas, and verify the outcome of affected business operations before retrying them.
