What is the difference between AI knowledge, business context, and persistent memory?

AI knowledge, business context, and persistent memory are related concepts, but they serve different purposes. Understanding these differences helps businesses configure AI Employees more effectively. AI knowledge Knowledge refers to information an AI Employee can use to understand relevant subjects and answer questions. In a business environment, this may include information about services, procedures, policies, and other approved company details. For example, a customer-facing AI Employee may need information about what a company offers and how customers can access its services. Knowledge helps the AI Employee provide responses grounded in the information made available to it. Business context Business context describes the circumstances in which an AI Employee operates. This may include its assigned responsibility, business identity, operational instructions, available capabilities, and information relevant to a particular task. For example, an AI Employee configured for internal operations may need a different context from one configured for customer enquiries. Even if both use some of the same company knowledge, their responsibilities and authorized actions may differ. Persistent memory Persistent memory concerns information that can remain available beyond an individual interaction or execution, according to the supported memory functionality and configuration. This is different from information that exists only in the immediate conversation. Persistent memory can help supported AI experiences maintain relevant continuity over time. However, memory should not be interpreted as unlimited storage, perfect recall, or automatic access to every previous conversation. The information retained and used depends on the applicable memory implementation and controls. How do these concepts work together? Consider an AI Employee supporting a business enquiry. Its knowledge may provide information about the company's services. Its context may define its role, instructions, and the specific enquiry it is handling. Where supported memory is available, relevant retained information may provide additional continuity. These capabilities can contribute to more useful AI assistance, but they do not eliminate the need for accurate business information or appropriate operational controls. Why does this matter? Businesses often expect an AI assistant to understand their company simply because they have given it a name or assigned it a role. In practice, effective business AI depends on relevant knowledge, clear responsibilities, appropriate context, and carefully configured capabilities. Polyosync brings these concepts into a broader AI workforce platform that also supports business automation and collaboration between AI Employees.
